“Fabricated Vessel” is a series of textile sculptures that was created after MeiMei was forced to cancel her Chinese citizenship due to China’s Nationality Law. Referencing traditional Chinese Blue and White Porcelain motifs, this body of work questions and re-evaluates all the conscious and unconscious sacrifices that an immigrant must make.
These vessels are “fabricated” because they are not only made from deadstock fabrics, but also from MeiMei’s fragmented memories of her homeland, which is the only connection she has to it now.
Each vessel is stitched, painted, beaded and finished by hand. They are made from 100% silk satin, pigment, Japanese glass beads and lined with silk cotton fabric.
